Warming Up: Cat/Cow




Warming up in a beginner yoga class will often involve Cat/Cow pose, usually practiced as a vinyasa sequence (on the breath).

The starting position for Cat Pose and Cow Pose is on all fours in a table top position.  The knees should be stacked below the hips, and wrists stacked below the shoulders.  The spine is neutral and we are looking down.


On an inhale, slowly lift the tail bone towards the ceiling, and lift and open through the chest, coming into Cow Pose.


On an exhale, round the spine towards the ceiling and release the head towards the floor to come into Cat Pose.


To further warm the body we can add a leg movement into this sequence.

Inhale and lift the leg in Cow Pose.


Exhale and tuck the knee in towards the chest in Cat Pose.


You can move through these poses in your own time as many times as you like!

In today's video I show you how I move through the Cat/Cow vinyasa and incorporate Child's Pose and Cobra Pose (from last week) into the sequence.
