Thursday is BEACH CLEAN DAY!!!
The plastic situation is not great here, you guys. It's far worse than Alyui Bay. I mean, obviously the situation in Raja Ampat in general was pretty awful, but where we actually lived when we were in West Papua was pretty protected and not a lot of debris was washing up on the beach. Here, this is not the case.
No, it's not the case at all.
Every single morning the tide line is littered with plastics... Bottles and cups mostly. Lighters and random pieces of foam and rubber. The usual stuff. Just in HUGE amounts.
It's nice to have arrived here with a system of beach cleaning already in place. Every week, on a Thursday after work, the staff gather to clean the site. It's such a great exercise for building community and awareness and general pride in the place you live.
Of course cleaning isn't really enough. What we need to start doing is reducing the amount of waste we produce. An easy way to do this is to refuse single use items - straws, bags and bottles. Remember, there's no excise for single use!
